Doorway Pull Up Bar | Doorway Chin Up Bar
One of the cheapest, yet most effective pieces of equipment anyone can purchase to boost their upper body strength is a doorway pull up bar/doorway chin up bar. If you aren’t entirely familiar with this piece of equipment, it is simply a bar which is fixed or wedged in an inside doorway, allowing a person to grab a hold underhand or overhand and pull themselves up.
Although fit people can make chin ups and pull ups look easy, they are actually tough exercises and somebody going from completely sedentary to trying to do either will soon see they can’t do many – if any – at all.
Pull ups are generally the underhand variety which involve the biceps more, whereas chin ups are done overhand and involve less biceps and put more emphasis on the back muscles – namely the latissimus dorsi (lats) which give your back that desirable ‘Y‘ shape.
If you are a relatively advanced trainee and don’t think a doorway pull up bar would challenge you a great deal, it’s worth pointing out they are often used in conjunction with dip belts with added weight. Even the top bodybuilders use various chin up/pull up exercises, so they are far from limited; even the biggest and strongest can get bigger and stronger from them if done right.
An idea for those who are very weak but still keen on the idea of purchasing a doorway chin up bar is to also purchase dumbbells and a barbell, if you haven’t got them already, and work on building up biceps strength with curls and lat strength with bent over rows. Also, if you are carrying a fair amount of fat, this can greatly increase the difficulty in performing chin ups/pull ups so losing perhaps simply losing a fair amount of fat first will make them much easier.
If you don’t fancy the idea of trusting yourself to fix a pull up bar in your doorway, then you should look into purchasing a Powerbar which fits most doorways (check to be sure, first) by wedging around the frame using a cantilever so you can use it and remove it as you please.
